Redneck Tabloids

Yesterday the "breaking news" in Knoxville media were allegations lodged against a Powell High School administrator. The News Sentinel apparently found out about the grievances and decided to publish not only the name and picture of the administrator, but also the name and picture of a student purpotedly involved, a UT football signee. Furthermore, both the KNS and WATE also included the name and a picture of Powell High principal who was reassigned for unrelated reasons (nudge-nudge-wink-wink).
The media furor apparently grew like a wildfire, and in 5 o'clock news, WATE was referring to the incident as a "sex scandal" and speculating about the youth's future in the UT football program, and this morning, WATE referred to the allegations as "accusations", adding that there has been no police involvement.
Accusations against whom by who? The facts of the case, as we have been able to read, are that there have been unsubstantiated rumors that have been investigated by the Knox County Schools HR department. The administrator in question has fully co-operated in the investigation. No proof have been presented, and everyone with first hand knowledge appears to deny any wrongdoing. The school system is not alleging that the administrator in question did anything wrong, either. The UT Athletics Department has indicated that they are not even going to investigate unproven allegations.
If it turns out that the allegations are indeed unfounded, irrepairable damage to the reputation of those involved has been done. The local media is doing its best to allude that "when there's smoke, there's fire". In this case, not only there's no fire, there's also no smoke, only a lynch mob running around with lighters screaming "burn the witch!"
